El Día de los Muertos is a two-day celebration during which loved ones return from the afterlife to reunite with family and friends. This touching reunion is deeply rooted in ancient Aztec traditions and influences from Spain.
In preparation for these visits, families create an ofrenda, or altar, where photos of the departed are displayed alongside their favorite foods for them to enjoy on their return. The altar is adorned with papel picado, sugar skulls, candles, and other personal mementos.
At the heart of the ofrendas are flor de cempasúchil, or marigold flowers. These yellow and orange flowers hold a profound significance. They are believed to guide the spirits of your loved ones, and a path of marigold petals and candles leading to the altar ensures a safe journey back home.
With this rich tradition in mind, we’re thrilled to invite you to a special Día de los Muertos celebration at the Kiewit Luminarium on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m.
